How DO you deal with a man like Derrick May?

I’m a bit late to the party on this one, but I think it’s well worth writing about. Derrick May is not going to prison anytime soon. It’s simply not going to happen. So what can people do to send a message to the likes of May that his conduct is simply unacceptable?

Well, the club scene must start by providing leadership. Perhaps Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins could say something about the allegations against their friend – or maybe not in Juan’s case, anyway. And perhaps clubs could take a stance by refusing to book him. May might learn that he has to change his ways when the money starts to run out.

Look no further than Club 69 in Paisley in Scotland for leadership on this issue. They booked May for an event quite a long time ago. After being made aware of the allegations against him, they published this on their Facebook page.

This is what leadership looks like. Let’s see more clubs, more magazines and more fellow DJs taking a stand.
