An anonymous friend sent this tweet in my direction on Friday, which puts the Sondela post that I did the other day in a rather different context. It turns out one of the reasons that Sondela isn’t doing too well is that it’s effectively been under part time management.
Until now. Sef Kombo previously had a job at Transport for London, but has now handed in his notice. This means that he’ll now have more time free for running Sondela Records – the afro influenced outfit that’s owned by behemoth Defected – but there’s just one question remaining.
Will Kombo be allowed to do his job without having someone keep an eye on everything he does? Defected’s own statement about Sondela before its launch revealed that he wouldn’t be the sole A&R at the label. Louie Dunmore would be too – that’s one of the boss’s sons, if the name sounds familiar.
Defected has Adrienne Bookbinder, Classic Music has Luke Solomon, Glitterbox has Melvo Baptiste and so does Soulfuric. But at Sondela, the task is shared between Seb Kombo and Louie Dunmore. Why the discrepancy?
