Black Coffee is one of those names that the dance music press wrote about a lot some years ago. Curiously however, he no longer appears on their pages as he became a huge international star. I can’t help but find it odd that dance music wouldn’t want to celebrate its more successful artists, but I digress.
Now, this story has been national news in his native South Africa, but relatively unreported elsewhere in the world. And rest assured that no dance music publication has touched it. It’s all about his extremely messy divorce from now estranged wife Enhle Mbali. To the best of my knowledge, he hasn’t tried to sue any South African outlet that reported on these allegations.
Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, better known as Black Coffee, married Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa back in 2011 – followed by a celebration of their union with a white wedding in 2018. She is an actress and businesswoman who hails from Johannesburg. They had an extremely lavish wedding at Sun City, rumoured to have comfortably cost a six-figure sum. The first few years of the marriage went well – until things started to come crashing down in early 2019.
Mbali has accused him of slapping her wrist whilst celebrating her 33rd birthday at home, and of psychologically abusing their two children. Maphumulo denies those allegations and claims that he actually pays Mbali over £3,000 per month. He also denied allegations that surfaced in 2019 of an affair with a French socialite – and also an ex-wife of David Guetta, telling the media “It’s not true. Someone decided to make that up.”.
One allegation that Maphumulo has never denied, however, is the claim that he fathered two children outside of his marriage. Both of the children are 2 years of age to different women, and it’s rumoured that they’re not his only marital indiscretions.
And he’s far from the only DJ out there with a, shall we say, skeletons in the closet. A few of them have even made their way into my Wednesday Whisper columns…
