Illegal parties appear to be quite the problem this year in Ibiza. I suspect a lot of this is down to restrictions currently in place on the island – face masks must be worn indoors, social distancing is in place and club capacity is limited. Hence why some are taking matters into their own hands.
Ocio de Ibiza – an organisation that represents clubs and other nightlife venues on the island aren’t happy. They believe those who are caught performing at such events should effectively be shunned by licenced venues. Their stance might be somewhat motivated by self-interest, but politicians could see this and close the whole lot down, stopping everything.
That said, this proposal wouldn’t be hard to implement. Without going into too much detail here, the Ibiza scene is mostly run by a small number of families. They typically don’t tread on each other’s toes and have been known to occasionally work together when common interests arise. And they certainly have a common interest in remaining open and being able to trade without illegal parties threatening their businesses.
Indeed, one can’t help but wonder why such a proposal couldn’t be implemented across the dance music industry. Those DJs who performed at raves during the pandemic with little to no safety considerations – shouldn’t they be punished? It wouldn’t even be that difficult to implement. Let’s see it happen…
