Well it’s nice of you to say hello at long last, Whitney! Resident Advisor’s new editor finally gets a mention on her own website – but what took them so long?

If you’re a regular reader of Resident Advisor, you probably wouldn’t have been aware that they had a new editor in charge. Because for some reason, they’ve only just announced the news today. And in their typical style, the article is desperately short on any meaningful detail whatsoever.

I have no idea why it took so long for them to write about it. For example, Wei herself announced the news on social media on Friday 2nd July. I found out through a journalist on Sunday, and scheduled an article for Monday 5th July. Two and a half weeks later, their editor decides she should say hello. It’s as if Resident Advisor doesn’t know what’s going on at Resident Advisor.

Anyway, the statement from one of the site’s founders, Paul Clement, contains an interesting admission. He says “This is the first time we’ve recruited externally for a new editor-in-chief in over a decade”. Is this code for “no one we’ve already got is anywhere near good enough for the job”. Perhaps making several staff redundant last year wasn’t their best decision…

Another thing that isn’t revealed – unsurprisingly – is her salary. How much will she be getting paid to edit the website? A source at RA tells me the subject of salaries at the website is “a touchy one”. When asked why, he sent me a copy of their application to Arts Council England for funding – and this is publicly available on the What Do They Know website, before anyone asks – where I saw this…

Yes, I can see why this would be a “touchy” subject…
