You might not be seeing it all even with a video: why the footage of Todd Edwards at his first ever UK appearance in 2003 has more than meets the eye

There are lots of things about Todd Edwards that previously remained unknown. His music, particularly remixes, used to be everywhere until around 2000 – then they trickled down and eventually disappeared a few years later. Why? And how did he get back into music anyway?

These questions, and others, are answered in an interview he did with The Guardian – which manages to be interesting and reveal things which weren’t known before. We also get to find out the truth about this as well…

In case you’re unfamiliar with this video, this was filmed in 2003 and is Todd Edwards’ first ever appearance in the UK – at the Time and Envy on Romford’s South Street. His music always did well in Britain, but like other producers of his era – Mood II Swing is another prime example – he never did venture across the Atlantic to see the action for himself.

Edwards never struck me as being particularly happy in this video. His smile seemed forced. And the reason I thought that is because… well, it was. In his own words, he was “scared to death” at the time. Like a lot of producers of that era, he had very little experience of clubbing. Much of the music from the 90s was actually made by people who never saw how it was received on dancefloors with their own eyes.

It’s astonishing how much of dance music’s history isn’t recorded. And even when we think it is, we still don’t know exactly what was going on…
