Dancing at a wedding is fine, but dancing at a nightclub isn’t – the bizarre situation as Northern Ireland ease off on more Covid restrictions

Northern Ireland’s utterly bizarre approach to relaxing Covid-19 restrictions continues unabated. A few weeks ago, I blogged about the true oddity of how the province appeared to be lumping nightclubs in alongside ballroom dancing venues.

Well, the latest relaxations kicked in at 5pm on Friday – and naturally enough, nightclubs weren’t mentioned. Unlike their counterparts in Britain, they still aren’t permitted to open – but if you go to a wedding or civil partnership ceremony now, you’re allowed to get up and have a dance.

Exactly what is the difference between dancing in a nightclub and dancing at a wedding? As far as I can see, not a lot. I speak from personal experience – from what I remember of my own wedding, I recall lots of terrible dancing on my part with quite a few other people. One can only hope they remember less than I do about it.

The weirdness continues. And somewhat unsurprisingly, no one in Stormont can explain the difference either…
