Here’s One They Made Earlier:  hip-house, a change of direction from Mike Dunn and the power of using less chords

This week, I go all the way back to 1993 and a track which came out on Chicago Style Records that year – “Let Yo Fro Gro” by Bush Man. I find there was a certain innocence to house records in this era – mostly because much of what was coming out hadn’t been done before. It was all new, and this one felt all new too.

The odd thing is it wasn’t particularly. Mike Dunn, who turned out one of his notorious dubs for this release, had been producing house already for a number of years – but around this time, his sound started to evolve slightly. He moved away from his early sound, and went in a direction with softer sounds and more shuffling drum programming.

See what you think…

For me, this one combined a new sound from Mike Dunn, a sequence of just two chords helping drive things along, and a male vocal reminiscent of the short-lived hip-house period from a few years earlier…
