Here’s One They Made Earlier: just how DID Mike 303 make such an interesting track with so few elements to play with?

This Monday evening, let’s go back to the turn of the millennium. Weirdly, I still remember the first time I heard this song – Saturday, January 8th, 2000.  French house was still a big thing back then. The genre was rife with sampling, some of it a lot more intelligent than others – but this one sticks out in the memory.

To this day, no one has been able to work out where the three-note sample comes from. Everything about this song says it simply shouldn’t work – yet it does.

It’s basically a sample, possibly a bassline added on top, some drums and that “Electric Boogie” vocal snippet over six minutes. I still find it absolutely astonishing how these highly gifted French producers were able to produce gold out of such little material…
