Sex sounds on daytime radio? Not okay! Sexually explicit lyrics on daytime radio? Not a problem – the weird world of Ofcom

Let’s get one thing out of the way here. Playing the song “French Kiss” by Lil Louis on daytime radio is not a good idea. It may sound like a fun and cheeky idea, but it isn’t.

Certainly not on mainstream FM stations, anyway. I would not want to be driving the car and have to potentially explain to my inquisitive 4 year old son what he had just heard. Which is why the fine issued to an Essex radio station was entirely justified, in my opinion.

And if you think you’ve never heard it? You most probably have, you just don’t know it! I wouldn’t listen to this if you’re reading the blog from work, by the way. Or if you’re at your gran’s house.

And yet I can’t help but wonder about our regulators in this country. They won’t allow a song with sex noises in it to be played, but they will allow songs with graphic descriptions of oral sex to be broadcast at any hour of the day.

For example, Cardi B’s song “WAP” features the following wordsmithery…

Beat it up, nigga, catch a charge,

Extra large and extra hard,

Put this pussy right in your face,

Swipe your nose like a credit card”

Charming.

They also have no issue with them prancing around on the TV wearing virtually no clothes either.

Go figure.
