Mixdowns? Dive in and learn!

Articles with titles like “5 Mixing Rules You Should Be Breaking” always amuse me. I’m not saying for one moment here that you shouldn’t pay attention to these articles. Some of them might actually prove to be quite useful. Most don’t, if I’m honest, but the above one is.

I personally think it’s one of those things you just have to try for yourself. If you’re trying to create your own sound, I think you need to take as much creative control over as many aspects as possible of it.

I think it’s one of those things where you learn to get better with every release. For example, I sometimes listen back to my early releases. I have few qualms about the actual music – the arrangements, chord progressions and so on.

But I always spot something in the mixdown that I would probably do differently if I was doing it in the present. I wouldn’t have it any other way. If I was looking for the perfect mixdown, I’d still have not released anything, and I’ve now been doing this for 5 years…
