As the already long charge sheet against Bassnectar gets even longer, shock as his solicitors threaten to sue his alleged victoms for defamation

A few people have recently asked me why I’m not talking about Bassnectar on this blog. After all, I’m “gunning for Derrick May”, according to one of them. So what’s the difference?

It’s a good question. The main difference is simple. The allegations against Bassnectar, real name Lorin Ashton, are in court at the moment. Although I have plenty I could publish, I’m aware that bringing some of the charges against him to court is extremely hard, and I don’t intend to do anything to risk that prosecution.

The last thing I would want for the alleged – and I must say that precisely because this in court – victims is to deny them justice. Trials must be fair and have the opportunity to progress without impediment.

That said, I don’t think his solicitors are doing him any favours with their defence of their client. In a detailed response to new charges added to an already lengthy list, they claim that Ashton is considering suing some of the people making these allegations.

This is an extremely unwise strategy for several reasons, not least because they’re going to get ripped to pieces for it if their client is found guilty. Also, it’s worth pointing out that a not guilty verdict does not legally mean he did not do it – it simply means the jury was not satisfied of guilt based on the evidence.

I’ll be coming back to this one…
