Much has been written about Derrick May over the years, and a surprising amount of it remains online, surviving various upgrades since the early years of the internet. Take this article from 2001, written when May was a sprightly 38 years old.
He claims in this lengthy article – ah, the benefit of the Find feature on browsers! – to be on an income of roughly $2.2million a year, yet now claims to have no money. He always seems to have money for cigars, and the time to partake in ridiculous videos…
The final line of the article is revealing…
“May said he plans to keep his roots in Detroit and continue to be an ambassador for change. He said he wants his legacy to be that he lived to be different.”
They say of politicians that they come in two hues – the ones that failed and the ones that got out in time. One can only wonder which category May falls into…
Speaking of which, I’m hearing rumours emanating from Detroit that May is considering doing what he said he wouldn’t – namely, leaving the city where he made his name. Apparently, he’s been looking at ways of getting permanent residency in Europe – specifically in a European Union country.
This would allow him to avail the freedom of movement that exists between the EU’s 27 nations. A source told me he’s joked with friends about marrying his current girlfriend, who lives in Greece, and getting citizenship that way.
The only country he wouldn’t be able to enter is the United Kingdom – a terrible shame. This blogger would just love to greet him at an airport. Although I suspect my welcome would not be a conventional warm British one…
