Here’s One They Made Earlier: 13th June 2022

We like it funky on the Here’s One They Made Earlier column, and this week’s choice is one of the funkiest things to come out of 2005. If you’re into your EDM, you might have heard the name Wolfgang Gartner more than a few times – but he earned his stripes elsewhere making house music under his real name, Joey Youngman.

Solu Music are these days probably best known for their song “Fade”, licensed to Hed Kandi and Ministry of Sound in the UK – but this does them a disservice. This song is called “It Ain’t Love” and features the vocals of Kai Martin. And regrettably, this had all the potential to be an instantly forgettable record in the wrong hands.

Youngman shows exactly how to handle a record like this. The elements he introduces add something to the mix whilst not distracting too much from the vocals at hand. Whether it be the deeper bassline, the two-chord sequence heard playing through much of the song, the skippy drum programming or the saxophone – it just all works…
