Is Detroit’s toxic masculinity wearing off?

The world of Detroit techno – and arguably Detroit dance music more widely – has historically been quite homphobic. Despite the fact house music is descended largely from gay black men, there have always been elements from the early days who resisted or denied that fact – and Detroit is no exception.

Over the past few years, allegations of Detroit techno’s macho culture has been under the spotlight – Annabel Ross, for example, recently accused the likes of Carl Craig and Alexander Omar Smith of displaying “toxic masculinity” after sharing a tasteless meme featuring herself. Detroit sources have now told Ears To The House that this criticism is beginning to hit home.

One source close to many of the scene’s big players told us that “Carl Craig knows his career’s had a shot in the arm now May is out of action, and he wants to use it for positive reasons. This is why he’s playing more gigs in venues more catered at the gay community – Hï Ibiza and Glitterbox, for starters. He’s also encouraging his bros to do similar things – he really wants to make Detroit look more friendly. He thinks it would be good for them with more gigs and good for Detroit business.”.

Whilst another source – who’s gay himself, before anyone asks – tells us “Yeah, there’s definitely something going on. Glitterbox probably has the gayest crowd in Ibiza – Carl has always had an eye on the business side, something a lot of the Detroit guys don’t. And he knows the anti-gay stuff costs them money.”.

Whatever the truth, one person is very glad to have had Carl Craig over at Glitterbox last night. Simon Dunmore, owner of Glitterbox and Defected, posted this photo of him a few days ago on his official Twitter account – although for some reason, Dunmore didn’t give Craig a chance to button up his shirt first…

Let’s just say we’re a very long way from being persuaded of this Damascean conversion…
