Here’s Three They Made Earlier: old tunes and older tunes every Monday | December 11, 2023

As we get ready to say farewell to another Monday, it’s time for our usual look back at the increasingly extensive archives of the dance music world. Each week, members of the team pull out three choices from dance music history, ranging from well-known to those which have been forgotten over the years.

This week, we’ve dug out a couple of fine moments from the David Morales archive – but because it’s so utterly extensive, we had to narrow it down to his Red Zone mixes. These were remixes that often had a harder or deeper sound than the normal Morales stuff – and were named after the club on West 54th Street in New York.

First up, here’s one of several remixes that Morales produced for American hip-hop and dance music producer Doug Lazy’s track “H.O.U.S.E.” – they loved records that named the genre in those days. This one has something of a rave feel to it…

Next up, here’s one released in 1991. The original mixes of this have lots of uplifting piano and fine singing from Ce Ce Peniston. This Red Zone dub goes in an entirely different direction – starting with a bassline and working its way up from there…

And finally, here’s a Red Zone mix which was made long after the nightclub itself closed down in 1991. Morales occasionally still uses the name to this day for remixes that don’t fit his signature sound – and here’s one he did for Quantize a few years ago…

More selections next Monday…
