The Six On Saturday (That Aren’t From Me!) – 1st May 2021

On the week that a Florist woman winning $500,000 on the lottery caused her to burn her dinner, I go through the latest records and bring you the prime cuts, ditching the burnt bits as I go.

Robert Owens & TeamRedz – What You Waiting For (Raising)
It’s always difficult to know what to do for the best when someone involved with a record passes away before its release. That’s what happened here – Kenny Redz, one half of TeamRedz, died after they finished producing this. I’m glad this release has happened, because both mixes are utterly excellent. Label boss Sy Sez puts in a deep, hypnotic workout whereas True2Life keeps to the deep side, but adds a bit more bounce to it. Fantastic release.

Ruby Francis – Betcha She Don’t Love You (Papa)
The vocals on this are really distinctive. The original sounds a little bit 1980s to me, and is a joyful enough number. As for Sebb Junior’s version, one word – wow! He’s chosen some very deep sounds and gorgeous chords for his remix and I think the results are bloody sensational.

Ten City – That’s The Way Love Is (Ultra)
I know that I recently gave Masters At Work’s new single a really bad review. This is because I know they can do much better. And Louie Vega, one half of MAW, proves my point here as he remixes the 1989 song by Ten City. This has got groove, it’s got soul, it’s got its own sound, in the way “Mattel” just doesn’t. Ditching the well-known chords from the original was a risky choice, but Vega got this to work. The dub is alright, but the main mix is where the fun is here.
