Here’s Three They Made Earlier: 3rd July 2023

As another Monday comes to an end, it’s time for another edition of Here’s Three They Made Earlier. Three tunes from yesteryear, all chosen by the team almost totally at random. From big tunes to obscure ones, everything has its place here. So, let’s get to this week’s choices…

First up is a slightly unusual one from 1994 – mostly because its subject matter is almost never covered in house music. Candice Jordan speaks on “Shoulda Known Better” about her experiences of domestic violence. There were a lot of mixes of this, but it’s Mike Dunn who turned out something surprisingly simple but effective…

Next up, one from the year 2000. This one’s by D*Note and features the vocals of Beth Hirsch – and it was also remixed by none other than Frankie Knuckles. However, the mix we’ve chosen is an odd one – it’s one of the rare house remixes made by Armin Van Buuren when he was starting out his career. It’s pretty good…

And finally for this week, a personal favourite from our editor. In 1996, London-based garage outfit Smokin Beats released a cover of “Times Are Changin” by Fred Fowler – an early house release from 1988. We’re obliged to say this is decent – but as ever, you can make your own minds up…

More selections from the past next Monday…
