There are few things more well-received within the dance music world than a great mix from a DJ. Exactly what constitutes a great set varies depending entirely on who’s playing – but traditional factors include technical ability, being able to blend two records smoothly, and the ability to simply choose good records.
Over the years, many great mixes were recorded onto the humble compact disc – back in the era before everything went digital. Some of our favourites at the Ears To The House office include Deep Dish’s Global Underground compilation from 2001, Sasha and John Digweed’s Renaissance: The Mix Collection from 1994, and almost anything by CJ Mackintosh.
But let’s not pretend this era was all great – for there were just as many mixes recorded at the time that are best forgotten. Almost any mix compilation released by a major label in the mid-90s comes under this category – with the actual DJ mix credited to some unknown entity who didn’t want their names associated with the dirge they were doing.
However, this one has got to rate as one of the worst from the time. In 1993, Danny Rampling did a set for Journeys By DJ – and the set fails abysmally to show off Rampling’s ability behind the decks. Over 22 tracks – DJ Pierre’s remix of “Groove On” by Yo Yo Honey appears second on the lineup, but mysteriously isn’t credited – he butchers and mangles almost every single transition.
It’s worth sampling the mix below simply for comedic value…
Let’s face it – if Ears To The House and social media had been a thing in the 90s, Rampling could have filled our DJs Playing Badly column most weeks of the year…
DJs Playing Badly is coming up later today…
