As Teksupport tickets go on sale, who’s the special guest?

Thursday is one of those curious days of the week, isn’t it? The weekend is finally in sight, but you still know you’ve got two days to get through first. For our part at Ears To The House HQ, it’s the day we start thinking about what’s going to be on the site on Sunday and early the next week. But we digress.

For Teksupport in Brooklyn – we heartily endorse the slogan “provides a solution within house and techno”, incidentally – it’s the day they start selling tickets for an event they’re holding on Friday 2nd September. The night will feature Ricardo Villalobos playing one of his 46-hour long remixes, Maher Daniel and of course, the 52-year old regular DJ Carl Craig from Detroit.

Exactly what Craig will feature in his set remains a mystery – his apparent one-man mission to demolish the toxic masculinity of the Detroit scene means he’ll play anything from hard techno to 1970s disco anthems these days. But what is more of a mystery is that Craig is appearing B2B – that’s back to back, in case you don’t know – with a “special guest”.

But who is this mysterious special guest? We don’t know – but one person whom Craig has appeared with recently was Jon Dixon. As regular readers might recall, they closed proceedings on the second day of Kappa Futur Festival recently. We weren’t exactly impressed in our review, saying…

“From what we heard, Craig’s usually tight track selection seemed off – and quite what Dixon added to the atmosphere by playing the piano on top of Craig’s ‘wonky, jarring mix”, as one colleague put it, isn’t quite clear.”

Who else could it be? Earlier this year, Craig did his first ever B2B with fellow Detroit DJ Moodymann – and in 2021, he did it with Seth Troxler. Stacey Pullen, James Murphy and Luciano are other names whom Craig has also jointly played alongside.

A far less likely – but not impossible – scenario is that Craig’s own mentor Derrick May will make an appearance. A source in Detroit who knows both men told us “Carl has always wanted to play back to back with Derrick. As far as I know, it’s never happened. Their schedules have never allowed for it. But now that Derrick is not so busy, shall we say, there’s more of a chance of it happening. It only takes one venue to say yes.”.

Will that venue be Teksupport? Unlikely, but at this stage, it can’t be ruled out either…
