Here’s Three They Made Earlier: old tunes and older tunes every Monday | October 23, 2023

As we get ready to say farewell to another Monday, it’s time for our usual look back at the increasingly extensive archives of the dance music world. Each week, members of the team pull out three choices from dance music history, ranging from well-known to those which have been forgotten over the years.

This week, we’re going back to the early 1990s for some goodies on the underground side. First up, it’s a project by House II House – consisting of Rudy Straker, Henry Maldonado, and David Carter. They released several tracks in this period – including “Hypnotize Me”, one of the many gems in the Strictly Rhythm catalogue…

Next up, it’s one from a duo who did much to spread the rave sound in the USA. Tommy Musto and Frankie Bones did a lot of work together – and here’s one of those moments. The early 90s had a lot of records where the singer wasn’t the greatest, but no one really cared – it was an era less about technical finesse, and more about having a good time.

Hence when Musto and Bones were asked to remix “When Can I Call You”, they added phone sounds to it – and even added a name that would be sure to get their British fanbase paying attention…

And finally, for tonight, it’s one from Doug Smith and Richard Payton. You might not recognise this duo by name, but you may recall aliases such as 95 North, Johnny Corporate, and Bassment Culture. This particular one appeared on George Morel’s Groove On label in 1993…

More selections next Monday…
