So how do you promote music in this day and age? No one seems to know the right answers to this question anymore – and Ears To The House certainly can’t profess any specific expertise in this area. But we suspect we know a few strategies that are unlikely to work.
For example, old TV adverts in the 1970s for kitchen appliances invariably had references to a wife cooking dinner for her husband or her children – whereas any company that created such a commercial today would find itself very short of work. In other words, times change, and people must change with the times.
But within sections of the dance music world – ironically brought about because of changing times – there are many who think that plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose is some kind of gospel. Such as the creators of the Hard Techno playlist on Spotify.
So what image are they using to promote this list on the streaming site? Er, this one…
Now, let’s be fair for a moment. Techno is a genre that is probably next to impossible to represent within one picture – but this photo featuring a half-naked woman being fondled by some guy is really the best that they could do?
So what do Spotify themselves think of all this? Ears To The House contacted them to ask – and this is what they had to say…
“For user generated playlists, such as this one, the user will decide on and upload their cover photo. All User Generated Playlists are subject to our Platform Rules. This includes the playlist cover, description, and title, and we often remove violative elements in playlists. This image does not go against our platform policies (the minimal nudity is not for the purpose of sexual gratification).”
We think we prefer the Daniel Ek censored version in this article’s cover photo, though…
