Time now to update you on a story which broke late last night. As Ears To The House reported, Moodymann - real name Kenny Dixon Jr - was involved in a car accident yesterday alongside a person from his Mahogani Music label who has not been named. We can confirm that Dixon and the unidentified person have been relatively lucky and are both now recovering in hospital. Sources have also confirmed that Dixon's only injury…

Planet E is 30 – but why has Carl Craig not had his mentor on?

If you had a look in the dance music world at what labels were around in the 1990s, you'll quickly notice almost all of them have long disappeared. If industry politics didn't take them out in the 90s, the collapse of vinyl sales in the 2000s did. So kudos goes to Planet E, who are now 30 years old. But before Ears To The House brings the champagne off the ice, one question arises from…

The dance music press attitude to Covid? Here’s a clue…

Was it always like this? This is the question posed about the dance music press - known mostly for being craven sycophants afraid to ask anything remotely difficult or controversial. The richest people in dance music with the best lawyers aren't journalists, after all... Hence why plague raves were barely mentioned in mainstream outlets like Mixmag. Whilst the likes of Business Teshno on Twitter were exposing DJs who performed at events with few or no…

Kevin Saunderson poses with Derrick May – then Louie Vega doesn’t…

It’s been a busy few days for Derrick May - perhaps it’s just as well, as he doesn’t have many of them anymore. Since Saturday, he’s been hanging around at the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit like an annoying turd that simply won’t allow itself to be flushed down the toilet. Some of his friends have been daft enough over the past days to actually pose with May in pictures - we reported yesterday…

Here’s One They Made Earlier: 30th May 2022

For this week’s installment of Here’s One They Made Earlier, it’s back to the year 2000 for a track we considered to be terribly underrated at the time. Back in the late 90s, dance magazines were full of commentary about how Deep Dish weren’t as good as they used to be earlier in the decade - commentary which, to be fair, was essentially correct. But anyone looking through the lengthy archive of Deep Dish remixes…

Phones on dancefloors – we agree with Simon Dunmore!

We have to concede that here at Ears To The House, we have mixed feelings about Simon Dunmore. On the one hand, the Defected boss is buying up huge swathes of house music history and claiming it as his own - but on the other, you don’t manage to remain in the music business for as long as he has without some business acumen. However, there is one subject where we find ourselves in total…

Will “I Want The Love Of My Own” by Frankie Knuckles EVER see the light of day?

Quite some time ago now - 26th August last year, to be precise - Ears To The House published an article about how a big mythical vault full of unreleased Frankie Knuckles records basically doesn't exist. However, there was one discovery in the archive which had the potential to be a truly historic house record. This was an unreleased track called "I Want The Love Of My Own". The song talks about sexuality at a…

Derrick May is now plugging Andres’s music…

The Movement Electronic Music Festival is concluding today in Detroit. The curiously rising star that is Ash Lauryn have performed, alongside the likes of Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and names like Kaskade - whose connection to Detroit techno is noted only for its total absence. One person whose name has been mentioned in press interviews to promote the festival has been Derrick May, the now very occasionally employed DJ. He didn't do a set this…

Did Phuture REALLY invent acid house? We investigate…

Those of you who have been loyal Ears To The House readers from the early days might remember that we’re basically a bunch of history buffs. As well as dissecting what’s going on in the scene right now, we do love to occasionally cast a magnifying glass on events from days gone by - and given that house music is nearing 40 years of age, there’s plenty to dust off and inspect. One of the…
