Here’s Three They Made Earlier: 17th July 2023

As we approach the end of Monday here at Ears To The House – unless a big breaking news story comes in, of course – it’s time for another instalment of Here’s Three They Made Earlier. It’s the weekly column where we highlights moments from dance music history, from the well-known to the obscurities hardly anyone remembers.

First up this evening is “Dreams”, a song by Smokin Beats and Lyn Eden. The track originally came out in 1996 and was a hit in London’s underground scene before being picked up by AM:PM the following year. They commissioned several new remixes to broaden its appeal – and this rather hypnotic Ian Pooley remix was one of them…

Next up, it’s a remix from the early days of house music. Back in 1989, Dave Lee – known by countless different aliases – released this track called “Forever Together” under his Raven Maize name. In 1996, a London duo called Basement Jaxx – who hadn’t yet released classics like “Red Alert” – applied their distinctive touch to the track. This was the charming result…

Finally this evening, it’s forward to the year 1999. The world was going crazy that year to Armand Van Helden and Duane Harden’s “You Don’t Know Me” – but amidst the huge success of that song, this one featuring Roland Clark ended up going somewhat under the radar. The sample is from “Think Twice” by Donald Byrd…

More selections next week…
